The Berlin Journal radio show is hosted by R. Jay Magill Jr. and is produced by Bettina Warburg-Johnson in Berlin, and Sara Richards at NPR in Washington, DC.
A PhD in American Studies, R. Jay Magill has written for a variety of publications, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Foreign Policy, American Interest, American Prospect, and Spiegel Online. He lives in Berlin.
Magill is also the editor of the Academy's magazine, The Berlin Journal, as well as the American Academy's website.
The American Academy in Berlin was established in 1994 to foster greater understanding and dialogue between the people of the United States and the people of Germany through its presence in Berlin, a city with which the United States shares unique cultural, political, and historical links.
In the spirit of maintaining fresh transatlantic exchange, the Academy offers residential fellowships to both established and promising American scholars, writers, journalists, policymakers, and artists, encouraging them to pursue their work in a manner that fosters participation in the vibrant life of the German capital.
This arrangement has resulted in what the German newsweekly Der Spiegel has called “the most important place for American intellectual life outside of the United States.”
